Taking Care of Your Smile

Mark W. Sheppard, DDS, strives to maintain excellent oral health for all of his patients. Most parents are aware of the steps to take to teach their children good oral hygiene habits – but what about adults? What steps do adults need to follow to take care of their smiles?

1. Make sure you are brushing your teeth properly. When asked if an adult knows the correct brushing methods for their teeth, most would answer “Of course.” Truth be known, they may not know the correct methods after all. Brushes should be thrown away and new brushes used every six months. Teeth should be brushed for a full two minutes. Some people brush their teeth too hard. Be sure to brush the inner and outer surfaces, as well as the chewing surfaces. Brush your teeth twice a day.

2. Don’t skip the flossing!

3. Avoid food and liquids that stain tooth enamel.

4. Have professional cleanings every six months.

5. See your dentist immediately for any mouth pain or other problems.

6. Stay hydrated.

7. See your dentist if you feel you are grinding and clenching your teeth.

8. Wear a nightguard if you know you grind and clench your teeth.

9. Do not chew on anything that is not food.

10. Do not share your toothbrush.

11. Avoid sugary snacks.
