If a tooth has decay, it will have to be removed prior to the point at which the tooth is filled. The decayed portion of the tooth will be drilled away so the space can be filled. The dentist might use a protective base or line to safeguard the nerve beneath the cavity. We use composite fillings that have the same color as the teeth as they are that much more visually appealing than silver fillings.

Though using composite fillings that match the color of other teeth requires more time and effort, it is worth it as these fillings look like normal teeth. The white filling is added to the drilled portion of the tooth where the decay was in the past. This filling is added in layers. Each thin layer is hardened with the use of a curing light. The dentist keeps the tooth dry while the curing takes place. Once the final layer of the dental filling is in place, the dentist will shape it and polish it so it looks just right.
